At the wool sales j2B 000 baJj- were sold for home consumption, .000 tor the Continent and 15,000 for the United States. The quantity held was 50,000 bales. The series was, started by the strong United States demand for the best ci oss-breds and the Russian demand io- best merinoes. The Yorkshire demand was fitful and erratic, but was moro normal and cheerful towards tho close. Best scoured merinoes were in strong demand, and generally a halfpenny to a, penny above July rates. Good greasy combings wero firm., but unchanged, while faultier showed a further decline, of o per cent. All fine and medium oross-breds reached the highest prices of the year, but shabby and faulty declined 5 per cent. The liner scoured sorts' were in good demand at par to 5 per cent decline. SI pes weakened till they reached 15 per cent below July rates. During the last ton days a strong demand arose, the buyers including United States operators.

The Mount Lyell Company has decided to take over an option of the properties of the Tasmanian Copper, Hercules and Primrose Companies. TO-DAY'S MARKETS. A. B. iSaiids and Co. report an entry about the same as last week, prices being about the same too. Owing tcf their being in full profit they are not being marketed too freely. Following were the prices realised: —Prime table chickens 5s 6d to 10s Id per pair, hens 4s to 6s 7d, ducks 5s (id to 7s 7d, turkeys (gobblers) to 38s, ail at per pair. Messrs J. B. Merrett and Co. report an entry of 17C0 birds to-day. Prices are still increasing, and the shortage of supplies is most apparent in table poultry, which to-day realised the record price of 10s 7d per pair. The following are the prices realised:— Table chickens 6s 6d to 10s 7d, hens 3=3 6d to (is Ski, pullets os to 9s 6d, ducks 6s to 9s, geese 8s to 9s, tutrkeys 7s to 325, all per pair. The egg market continues firm. Canterbury Egg Circle iirst grades realised Is 2d, seconds Is Id, country store eggs Is Id per dose-n. Tho following is a copy of a cable received by Messrs Dalgety and Co, Ltd., Christcburch, from their London ofhee, dated September 30:—-" Sheepskins.— Merino combing skins are firm and slightly dearer. .Merino clothing skins are slightly lower. Cross-bred combing skins are par to }d lower, especially New Zealand. Clothing skins are unchanged, whilst inferior are neglected. Cross-bred lambskins are $d lower. Five thousand six hundred bales were offered, of wluch 4700 were sold." The ISievr Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited, have received a cablegram from London giving tho following market information:— Sheep skins—Cross-bred \d lower.
