ATHLETES' DAY.
AN OPEN-AIR ARENA. CATHEDRAL SQUARE DISPLAYS. BIG COLLECTION FOR THE WOUNDED. City folk are always fishing down into a trousers' pocket for a patriotic shilling, and if at times they become tired of the exercise they should: remember that they get very good value for the money. A man will pay five shillings or more for a front seat at a boxing entertainment that gives him very few thrills; another will do the same to see a tug-of-war or kindred sport. Today the athlete,-; of Christchurck are providing a free continuous entertainment or mixed bports to please all tastes. It is free to the extent tliat contributions are voluntary, but the patrons lay themselves open to the persuasions of the gentler collectingbox sex. Hut here again it is hard to see where the voluntary contribution comes in, for the collectors liave an equivalent something to offer in the way or cigarettes, cigars, ( sweets, flowers and so on, for every coin that finds its way into their boxes. Therefore the athletes have shrewdly presented their free entertainment for the collecting of a crowd, and the more the crowd collects the more the collectors collect. This desirable end has been achieved in very full measure, as anyone may s«e for himself by stepping into Cathedral Square from the north, south, east or west. The Canterbury Caldon.um Society is providing the following pipers and dancers for Athletes' Day:—in the Square —Pipe-Major S. P... Craig, Dancers Mirv::cs Clara M'lntosh, Doris Petrie, Nellie Sinclair, Drucy Turner and Mr E. Evans. Riccarton and Sockburn — Pipe-Sergeant J. Shamth&n, Dancers Miss Jessie Hardio and Sylvia Stark. Belfast and Kaiapoi—Piper James Brskine, Dancers Miss Mabel Edginton and Mr Harry Edginton.
