IN A HELL OF SHOT AND SHELL.
HOW GENERAL MARCHAND FELL. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received October 2, 10.15 a.m.) PARIS, October 1. Calmly puffing bis pipe like a company commander, General Marchand placed himself at the head of a column in. the advance between Perthes and Scniain. This picture is given by a wounded private in the colonial infantry who was alongside General Marchand when he was wounded: " The* General's bravery was a, legend with the whole division. When the order to advance was given on Saturday General Marchand arrived amid a hail of bullets and made a short speech, which was inaudible owing to the big guns. Our colonial division, with the Moroccan division, a brigade of Zouaves and a brigade of the Foreign Legion, were launched against the trenches. They •covered 150 yards through a' pot'F&ot hell of shot and shell, jind Uad just reached the first Boche trench when General Marchand dropped with a shell splinter in his abdomen. Stretch-er-bearers picked him up and took him to tlio hospital at Suippes." He is doing well and it is. believed that his euro is only a question of time.
