POULTRY, PIGEONS AND CANARIES < I*l itori l.y CANARY.) T'lio .'Kdilor will be plear-ed to answer any questiuns from readers. Kindly tuldre?s correspondence to " Ca-iiary," ",Stiir " OJ]j.-o. The fortnightly meeting oi' -the Ohristchureh Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Club was held on Monday last, Mr .).' M'Loan presiding. A motion of sympathy with Mr G. K. Jeffries in i'ho loss of his mother, was carried in silence, Jill members standing. * * • MY Rpicer reported in regard to the honey section for the show. It was decided to leave the question over until a future meeting. A social committee was appointed as follows:—Messrs R. C. Wells, 1\ lhicvo. A. Capes, A. Pengellv, (}. E. Jeffries, J. Tindali, J. Chegwin. It. Pen roe, A. Walker and H. Beardsley, with power to add. Mr Wells reported on tlio eard match with the Oddfellows. It was decided to hold a return match in three weeks time. A motion to hold the annual show next year was carried, and it was decided to appoint the judges on October 25. The suggestion to support the South Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association's art union was carried after discussion. * * Mr Walker, president of the South Island Association, is having a great season with his Silver Wyandottes. "•" A meeting of the Canary ana Cage Bird Club .will be held on Wednesday next. » • Those who mated their canaries early this season are not having any great results, unfertile eggs being verv common. The, fine weather is no doubt very tempting, but past results have proved that there is nothing to be gained bv early mating. October is quite early enough to start breeding. 1 # » * Tt is to be regretted that the Banks Peninsula. Agricultural and Pastoral Association decided not to 'add poultry classes to its show schedule. Thcso'classes, if arranged by experts, would prove-a big attraction at any show. ••* Mr Walker will visit the, Ota go Poultry Clubs during October, in connection with the South Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association's art union. V Recently I came across a work on Cage Birds, written in the year 1812. The part offering most interest was on canaries. As is to be expected there appears to be a big difference in the birds of that period and the present day birds. The author freely mentions white canaries, but I take this to be the present-day buff. He also goes into details of mule breeding, on the same lines as the present clay. The work is very interesting in view of the changes that have taken place m canaries during the past few years. The food question is well catered for. the following being the one recommended bv the author: —Rape seed as the staple food, with bruised hemp, canary or poppy seed, as an extra delicacy. Or another mixture, and, to use the author's words, a great treat for the birds is rape seed, oatmeal and millet or canary seed. He also mentions the following seeds that were used -.—Whole oats, poppy, lettuce, plantain potentilla and pink seeds, and maiae. •v In reply to P.V.'s request for a good food for'voting canaries, I would recommend the following:—Egg chopped very fine, with a little crushed biscuit added. This should be given two _ or three times a day in small quantities. See that the eg'/ trough is clean and take care that all stale fond is removed. Watercress «r young lettuce leaves should be given each morning. The plain canary seed should also be used m the usual way. * » Mr T. Ward, of Hornby, will deTTyer a lecture on the hatching and rearing of chickens in the Boys' Gordon Hall. Hereford Street, on Thursday. October 14. at 8 p.m. Any questions concerning poultry will be answered, and during the evening a collection will be taken up for patriotic purposes, tins lecture will be well worth attending, as Mr Ward is an expert in ihese matters. \ meeting of the Boy*' Gordon Hall Poultry Club will be held to-night,
