Mr W. V. Siddall, clerk to the Heathcote Comity Council, left for Wellington last evening. A Press Association message from Wellington announces the death of Mr J. M. Mr Charles Williams, is now ■engaged. on H.M.S. Viking as stoker. Stoker Williams is well known in Lyttelton, having undertaken two trips to the Antarctic with Captain R. F. Scott's expedition. It is interesting to note that Commander E. F. G. R. Evans, second in command of the expedition, is in charge of H.M.S. Viking. The churchwardens of All Saints' Church, Sumner, have been advised that the Nomination Board has appointed the Rev John de Burgh Galwey to take charge of the parochial d:strict of Sumner. Mr Galwey, who is at present on a visit to England, has worked for some years in the diocese, having received appointments oil different occasions at Lower Kiccarton, Belfast, Little River and the Chatham Islands. Mr T. N. Brodrick. Commissions of Crown Lands in Wellington, presided for the last time in that capacity at yesterday's meeting of tho District Land Board, states a Press Association telegram. He was congratu'ated by members on his appoi'ntment to the Fn-der-Secretaryship of Lands. The staff of the Lands Office also assembled and hade formal farewell to their retiring chief and presented him with a piece of plate. Yesterday, Corporal Albert Stanley, of the Seventh Reinforcements (Artillery), wiw presented bv Mr W. C. Cleary, on behalf of the shipping people of Lyttelton, with a sleeping bag. in making the presentation. A very enthusiastic gathering took place last evening in the Sumner Town Hall, when the members of the various volunteer bodies of tho borough mot to farewell four residents about to leave for the front. Mr A. CWilson presided. After a short toast list bad been honoured, Superintendent J. Carter, on b ha'f of tr? Fire Brigade, the Brass Band and tho residents of Sumner, presented Gunner F. Lawson with a letter of appreciation from the brigade, and a cheque and a tobacco pouch and tobacco from the residents. Mr Wilson presented Gunner [I. Smith, Gunner H. Swift and Trooper H. E. Peek with tobacco pouches find toh.ico each. The recipients were loudly cheered. Musical items were contributed bv Messrs .J. Lang, Howard, T. A. Firkin, -T. Fen ton and A. Sugdon and by a quartet from the Brass Band.
