A correspondent of the newspaper lt American," describing the fighting in the Champagne, says that thirty thousand Germans fell on sixteen mile front. Their retreat was swift and costly, especially northward of Beau se Jour. The on a hill above the Dormoise River was appalling. The Frenchmen's impetuosity drove the enemy from the crest of the hill into the river. Th© victors' shouts mingled with the ecreams of the fugitives* as, plunging Into the swift current, they were swept off, clutohing one another in a deathgrip. At certain points the stream was fordable over the piled bodies.
