CANTERBURY CHESS CLUB

A committee meeting <.f tlie club was held on Tuesday evening, the president, Mr R. A. Joseph, being in the chair. Two new members were elected and two resignations accepted. It was decided to commence the winter tourney as soon as possible, the handicaps being at status odds. Tho first prize has been donated by Mr F. R. Killing, the Dominion champion, and it was decided that the second and third prizes should be taken from the entrance fees. Details and conditions of the tourney were left in the hands of a f-üb-committ-eo. A sub-committee was also elected to compile a winter programme. An opening evening, to which all and sundry chess players are hereby cordially invited, wilt be held 011 Tuesday next, April 13, at 7.30 p.m. Supper will be provided and tho presentation of prises for tho summer tourney wiTv be made. In the last round of the summer tourney Mr Grant forfeited to Mr Cumberworth. In the game between Messrs Shillito and Severne the position 6eems to be slightly in favour of Mr Shillito, though-tW game is still somewhat in its earlier stages. Until this is fin ishea the allocation of any ot the prizes is uncertain.

T. Hawkins, on Tuesday e-Tening, successfully beat off the attack of W. H. Joyce for rung 8 on the club ladder. Mr A. J. Richardson has recently been elected a member of the club, ana Mr J. Maclaren has rejoined the club after an absence of a season. Messrs F. Woodford and H. Gourley are contesting rung ii an the club's ladder. Intending members jtre advised to join the club at their earliest opportunity. A full programme is being drawn up of good chess fare for the winter, including winter tourney for set of chessmen donated by the present New Zealand champion, Mr F. 11. Keliing, lightning tourneys, open evenings, simultaneous displays, telegraph matches, etc., which will ensure sufficient variety for all types of members. The summer tourney is now in its concluding stages, and promises a very, close finish. It has proved, undoubt-' edly, one of tho most successful tourneys, from the point of view of handicapping, in the history of the club. At present there is a probability of three players tying for first place. SI r Hawkins has the fine score of 12 wins, 'i losses to his credit; Mr Sevorne, with one game to finish, has 12 wins, 3 losses; while Mr Oilmbeiworth, with two Raines to iinish, both of which are in his favour, has 10 wins, 4 losses.
