[of. etc.. which may be ileft at th«._ Misses Westhrook's boot shop, Sumner, or ' with a member of the Committee. LIFEBOAT BRIGADE. The necessity for a thoroughly up-' ioklate alarm, for calling the "Brigade' together has been fully demonstrated lately, in the-boating accidents which •have occurred during the last two months. On inquiries being made it has been found possible to purchase a ; powerful siren for £5. It is proposed that this should be set up on the Cave 'Rock, and should be operated by a quarter horse-power electric motor, which could be purchased for £ll, the Tramwav Board having undertaken to supply tile power. Ft is estimated that, tho complete appliance jean-he purchased'and set up for ahoui, ; €2O. The Sailing and Vawr Boat | Clubs at Sumner and . SUMNER LADIES' MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB.

It has been suggested that a ladies' miniature rifle club should be formed at Sumner lor practising rifle .shootinc; and to fire matches with other clubs. 'Pwo suitable miniature rifles can be .purchased for £7 15s, and it is proposed to secure the use of a resident's garden/ to give a range of at least 25y<i'd. The club could be formed when the names of at least thirty members are forthcoming. The subscription fee .is to be ss, wmcli will cover the'expenses incurred in preparing the range, procuring target supports and two mattresses for the firing point. There will be no further subscription, but a charge of 3d will be made for every seven rounds of ammunition supplied. All ammunition used on the range must be purchased from the. secretary, so that the small profit made from the sale should coyer the cost of targets and upkeep of the range. It is proposed that the following officials should be appointed:—Patron, vice-patrons, club captain, honorary secretary, treasurer and' two honorary .instructors,.and that the club should be managed by a committee consisting of the club captain, secretary, treasurer and six other members. Already twelve ladies have signified their willingness to become members, and as soon as the balance of the number required has' been procured, the club will be immediately formed. YACHTING. - >v The Te Arai and Waterwitoh,.from ■Monck's Bay, put up a very good performance at Lyttelton Regatta on New Year's Day. Owing to a choppy sea they had a very wet passage throughout. Rounding the western buoy the Waterwitch, going well to windward, began to asSuttie the lead', and.a.t the turning for the second round was'omin in front of the Te Arai. Unfortunately, during • the next round one of the. crew," lost the bailer overboard, and, being, jtinafale to keep the water down, her sldppef was compelled to return to the breakwater to procure a bucket. In the meantime, as the Te Arai had secured a substantial lead, it was decided, owing to the pirong wind, to reef down her sails. The Te Arai finished an easy first, her time being 3hr 14min. The Waterwitch, wllo made another start/"'-aft-jr several accidents, finished second in. Shr 44min. I In connection with the Sumner Red Cross carnival, the club have arranged for four races. The prizes will be given as in last yeai J s gala, and any I deficiency will be made up by the club. jin this way relieving the- Red''Cross, fund of all fLnanoin.l responsibility .in the matter. The races will be as follows:—Yachts over 18ft, speed launches and utility launches, each race carryinjjf a sweepstaice of os, yachts xmder 18it with sweepstake of 2s 6d. Mr TV A. Cloudeslev has offered' a special prize for the speed launch race, and Mr John Smith, of Redcliffs, will make up any deficiency between the entrance fees and the total prize money in the utility race. SUMNER BAR. > "V."*--

The Sumner bar was in a very dangerous state on Saturday, and Sunday. Some of the. boats returning from the Lyttelton regatta hud a severe handling. The two speed launches Disturber and Active* were the first over at about •5.80 on. Sunday morning. They negotiated the breakers without trouble, and, manoeuvring in front of a breaker, were able to.keep in front of it with the help, of their high speed'. Mr J. Hindi's Blue Bird following, being skilfully handled, skimmed in like a surfboard on the crest of a large breaker.. Several other motor-boats, attempted to cross, but their owners at the last minute wisely decided to put back into Bell's Baths Harbour aj'ul wait for the evening tide. During the afternoon three more launches put in a.t the harbour. The yacht Water Witch also arrived about 3 p.m.. and for a time it looked as if her crew intended attempting a crossing, but at the last minute she put back. By this time there was a large and' assorted collection of boats in the harbour, and the very indifferent accommodation afforded was taxed to its fullest extent. During the afternoon the bar became worse. In the evening, at high water, ex-Pilot Mines navigated the Nautilus over, followed later "by Handeock's speed launch and the Marahui. The last two nearly came to grief, broaching to in the breakers, the latter in particular beiuc; for a time in a most a.wkward position behind the beacon. The lifeboat brigade-had a full crew on. duty all the afternoon. The remaining boats were put up on to the boat harbour, to wait for a. more favourable opportunity.
