SWIMMING.

(NOTES BY NATATOR.) Cold evenings of late have not tempted swimmers to the Cold water baths, and interest in the sport of swimming seems likely to lag, at least until the carnivals commence.. .

It is understood that as neither of the swimming clubs at Lyttelton is prepared to take over tho programme in tho graving dock at the New Year Regatta, tho Canterbury Centre will conduct the events as usual. Iu xhis event the mile handicap will be the chief event. But.tho matter will bo fully discussed to-night by the Centre.

Tho junior polo competitions at the Tepid Bath have brought to light some very promising players, and there has been some pretty handling. None of the teams—East Christchureh, Walt-ham,-Sydenham, Addington and Richmond—seem to have a runaway chance. Addington have applied for" the reinstatement of D. Hales as a junior. He has not played in a match for about four years, but he is a champion at the game. However, his club has entered no senior team, and it looks as if Hales in juniors would be a great acquisition, and would give his team a very bright chance of winning.

Only ono dub, East Christcliurch. has : entered a team for the Senior Championship. Opawa was expected to enter a. team but has not done so. The club has lost G. Gemmell. who has left with the main Expeditionary Force, and L. Annand, who is on service at the Lyttelton fort. It is a pity that the competition should bo allowed to lapse. Some effort should be made to induce Opawa to get a team together.

The visit of Duke Kahanamoku is now practically an accomplished fact, and if all goes well he will be iu Christcliurch some time in February. Until he arrives in Australia it will bo impossible to ararnge definite dates.

The Patriotic Fund Carnival conducted by the Canterbury Centre on show night has just been wound up, and I understand that £3O was netted.

The roll of honour being prepared by the Canterbury Centre of those swimmers who have r;ono to the war promises to be a long ono. The Christchurch Club has sent twenty-five, and other clubs from eight to ten each.

The oldest local club—-Christcliurch —has fallen on evil days. The annual meeting was only held at tho third try. Mr J. R. Buchanan has agreed to take the secretaryship, however! and ho imy possibly maintain the club in its proper place in Christchureh. *»* Two prominent past officials of the Canterbury Centre, Messrs L. A. G. Rich I.nd C. Bryant, are to be married this month.
