SCOTTISH SOCIETY.

MCMTKLY CEILIDH. There was an unusually- large attendance at the Scottish Society's monthly ceilidh last night, over which Chief Broun presided. After the usual business, Piper Ronald Fraser opened the programme with a pibroch, and the following items were sub■mitted :—Miss Nellie Shepherd sang " Gam vo liv Atliole," giving "Yc Banks and Braes" as an encore; Mrs Gilmour, of Lyttelton, sang "Allan Water" as an encore to a charming exposition of "The Old Country,'' ; n which her rich contralto voice told effectively; "Scots Wha Hae," by wee Douglas Martin; a piano solo, "Jessie's Dream." by Mrs Gronin, the roar and tumult of the battlefield ami the triumph of the conquerors at Lueknow beiug beautifully suggested; immensely humorous character songs by Mr Al wv Lean, and equally quabit recitations fry Mr Smith. The dancing items were a Highland il:ng by Miss Clark, a double seann truibhais, by Misses Cherrie Young and Doris Soilness, ghilie Calum by Miss Turner, and reels and country dances by the juveniles. Miss Bessie Macdouald j>layed the ncfompaniinonts, :u<d Piper Fraser supplied the music for the highland df.ncing. The Chief auounced that Halloween, a children's festival, would be celebrated on October 31 in the early evening. ancl the Society's picnic would be held on Boxing Day.
