RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

Favourable climatic conditions prorailed this morning and the tracks generally provided good going. The centre of tho course '3roper and the plough were in most request by the trainers. Tho procoedings were marred by a regrettable and unfortunate accident, by which Mr A. W- Rutherford's promising two-year-old gelding, Downsteepy, was injured. The accident occurred while Downsteepy and Blitz were galloping half a mile on the course proper. Tho former failed to negotiate the turn, and despite every effort of his rider to keep him iirtbo centre of tho course, ho rah to the outsido und collided heavily with the picket fence near the approach to tho motor and carriagepaddock. Fortunately the boy Burrows, who was riding the- horse, escaped with nothing worse than a severe shaking and minor abrasions. Downsteepy was less fortunate. A great gash was torn in the muscles under the chest and the shoulder was almost separated from the body. The services of Mr H. Kyle, veterinary surgeon, were promptly secured, and he ligatured the ruptured arteries, thus stopping the bleeding. The wound was then stitched and the horse was able to proceed homo. The first two furlongs were left behind in 27sec, half a milo in 62sec, and a mile in lmin 45sec Halfway down the straight Rinaldo was being ridden along, but he stuck to his task in fine style, and although Warstep finished half, a length in front, as the winning post was reached,, it appeared as if Rinaldo was going quite as well at the finish. , The time for the full journey was 2min 39 &-ssee, from a standing start, and considering the heavy dew and the length of the grass on the running track, it was quite a satisfactory effort.
