WAR NAMES.

The war will increase the geographical knowledge of the " man' in the street"; yet he will sometimes be puzzled as to the pronunciation of the names of places in France or Germany. He does not want to be pedantic; ! and he knows that, in process of time, the names of these places will be Anglicised. Who but a pedant would call Paris " Pare© " I But, still, it is useful to know how the names of French places which appear in our newspapers every day should be pronounced, and we give some examples which may help:—Vise —Wahze; iYleaux—Mo; La Ferte sous Jouarre—La Fairty soo jooar; Soissons —Swasong; Ourcq—Chirk; Amiens— Ahmeeong; Charleroi—Sharlrwa; Dinant—Deenong; Liege—Leeago; Mezieres—Mezeeair; Fpernay—Aypairnay; Chalons—Shallong; Vitry le Francais —Veetray le Frongsay; River Aube— Ohbe; Verdun—-Vairdin, Luneville— Loonveal; Nogent—Knowjohn; Longwy—Longvey: Maubeuge—Mohbuzh; Lille—Leel; Ghent—Gong.
