WHITTA MAKES USEFUL CENTURY.

Tho second round of the Canterbury Cricket Association's competitions was opened to-day in fmo weather and on fast wickets. Tho feature of the Senior games was a much needed century by Whitta, who onco more saved his side. Reese and Donnelly put a timely stiffening into West Christchurch when it was needed, and the succeeding batsmen had enough confidence to score freelyWest Christchurch finished in a very strong position, and Riccarton have a substantial lead on St Albans. West Christchurch did not start brilliantly against Linwood, and had'three down for 58, Thomas at one stage having got three- wickets for 21. Then Reese- and Donnelly carried the score to 154 by lively criclwt, Donnelly lifting Ridley for six. Reese was out in lashing at Thomas. Donnelly was slow but sure, and after he went, Mathows and Youno- commenced to score freely. Mathews after a chance or two got going for 68, and Young helped the total to 284. Riccarton nearly had their reputation mined by tho St Albans bowling, Whitta being the only batsmani to get more than 20. But as he went in first and foil last he managed to make tho creditable score of 110 in his old style out of a total of 195. Sandman got five wickets for 49, which was a good performance against Riccarton. Boulton had. a good run with the ball against St Albans, and three wickets were down for 48,. Sydenham A, without Woods, went in against East Christchurch on a- hard, fast wicket at Lancastor Park. Handford, late Christ's College coach, was included in the East Christchurch team. At 41 Taylor was taken at point, but Watson ran to 51 before ho was caught by Beal off M'Lelland. Patterson and Hayes both, succumbed to M'Laughlan, an ex-Otago player, who performed well with the "ball. Forrester was caught and bowled brilliantly, and fivo wickets .were down for 96. A lucky, but effective innings by Martin, aided by some faulty fielding, improved tho position considerably. Johnston (four for 24), Doig (four for 35) and Harrison (two for 22) took the wickets for St Albans, who replied with 114 (M'Lean 26, Scott 37. Manson 13), Nixon, J. Prebblo and Carrick taking the wickets. St Bedo's, batting against St Albans JB, made 204 (M'Larcn not out 78, Father Quinn 31, C. Dwyor 29, E. Thompson 14). Hickmott, Wallis and Graham took the wickets for St Albans, who responded with five for 49 (Gra*hnm not out 19, Beadel 10, Beavers 12).

School replied with 50. and followed on, making 87. _ Sydenham made 58 for one wicket, winning the game by nine wickets. FRIENDLY GAME. An interesting game was played a,t Hagley Park between the Veterans and Y.M.C.A. Veterans batted first and made 176 (Harris 59. Page 50. Alp 20 and M'Nae IS). Y.M.C.A. replied with 153 (Robb 66, Olsen 31. Down 22 and Grant 10). Down and Wainscott bowled best for Y.M.C.A. and Harris and Rattray for the Veterans. PRIMARY SCHOOLS' COMPETITION Waltham met Woolston at Lancaster Park. Waltham made 156 for four wickets; Dunlor> 39 not out, Wilson 34, Elvy 26, Poulton 16 not out. Woolston replied with 23 ; Besley six for 10, Wilson four for 13 took the wickets for Waltham. CANTERBURY COLLEGE. The following team will represent Canterbury College against Sir Cecil Moon's team on Monday, at Hagley Park, at 10 a.m.: —Beal, Bowden, Crawshaw, Crichton, Donnelly, Lnttrell. Moor, Richards, W. B.
