BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening; present—Mr A. W. Owles (Deputy-Mayor) and Councillors C. Withell, J. Ashly, 0. Bergh, F. Kibblewhite and G. W. Staniland. An apology was received for the absence of the Mayor (Mr Winny) and Councillor Chidgly: A request was received from Mr J. Inglis for the extension of Estuary Road to his property by the clearing of lupins, etc.

Tlie request of the New Brighton Young Men's Gospel Mission for per„mission to hold open-air meetings on Friday evenings between 7.15 and 7.4-3 in George Street, near tlie Council's water tanks, was discussed, but *h& site was considered unsuitable. Permission was, however, given for the holding of the meetings at the pier. The request of the fire brigade for a dozen pair of boots was' referred to the Fire Brigade Committee. Notification was received from the Christchurch Gas Company intimating a reduction in the price of gas in tlie borough from 8s 4d to 7s lid par 1000 feet. The company also wrote intimating their intention to extend the mains alonf Park Road and Bo'whill Road provided the residents along these streets were prepared to guarantee an annual consumption sufficient to givo a fair return on the capital outlay. On the motion of the chairman of the Finance Committee, the rates for tlie year, as advertised in the local Press according to the statute, were confirmed. .

A letter from Mi* Cnrpjee suggesting that the Council should remove the sandhiH at the end of Rodney Street to admit of reasonable access for the residents of the locality to the beach, was received.

Councillor Auwr drew tho Council's Attention to complaints which had been received respecting persons bathing at Herring Bay without costumes, and also of tlie misuse of the swiners on tlie bench bv young men and women. The swinrrs had been erected for the use of children, and children seldom had the opportunity of usinrr them. The onestion of liability in the event of acc'dcnt was discus'Wl. and it was decided to obtain solicitor's opinion on the matter. In the meantime (he swinsrs were being put out >if action until that opinion was obtained. Council Bersrh moved that the Onnncil make annlication to the Commissioner of Police for additional notice assistance from the ?uonth of October to April inclusive. The motion was carried. This additional supervision, it was said, would lessen the motorbike nuisance, which was nil absolute danger along the beach.
