Dr Lipscombe arrived from, the north to-day. i :. Mr T. Brown arrired from Wellington to-day. . ; His Excellency the Governor left for Wellington last evening. Dr Edie was a passenger by the Wahine from Wellington to-day. Captain Crawford and Mi's Crawford left for Wellington la-st evening. Messrs D. O'Connor and G. A. Perry arrived* from Wellington yesterday. Mr W. Agar, president of the LytteU ton Wharf Labpurers' Union, returned from Wellington to-day. Mr J. S. Love, a noted of horses in Australia, is visiting Christchurch. He will stay in this city for a few days. . A Press Association messago from Wellington states that Chief-Warder Cook, of Auckland, will act as temporal'ay gaoler at Wellington. Owing to a slight indisposition the Hon R- H. Rhodes, PostmasterGeneral, has postponed his departuro for Wellington until to-morrow. Professor Bickerton, of Christchurch, has been engaged by tlio_ London County Council to, give a series of lectures on astronomy at some of its evening institutes during March and April.

At last night's meeting of the Woolston Borough Council a requisition was presented to the Mayor, Mr J\ J. Graham, from Councillors Lilley, Newton, liadcliffe, Fuller, Hart, M'Rae and Richardson, asking liim to allow himself to be nominated for the. position for the coming year and also expressing appreciation of the able manner in which he had carried out his duties during his present torm of office Mr Graham expressed thanks for tho appreciation of his work, promising to giro a reply in a few days. Sir Hartmann Just, tho Assistant Under-Secretary f'or the Colonies, who, in pursuance of the plan of sending out Colonial Office officials to become acquainted with the territories with which they aro concerned, is about to visit South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, was to leave England on February 7in the Kin fauns. Castle. He will sail from -Cape Town 011 March 7, reaching Adelaide three weeks later, and subsequently will go to Fremantle, remaining in Western Australia about a week. Sir Hartmann Just will then return to Adelaide, go on to Melbourne, and subsequently visit Sydney and .Brisbane. Ho will spend about eight weeks' in Australia and three weeks in New Zealand. His visit will terminate on July 3, when he will sail from Auckland for Vancouver. As he has to be back at the Colonial Office early in August Sir Hartmann will not bo able to make any stay in Canada. Such a, policy would mean arresting the material development of the dominions and condemning them to a future in which their condition as vast empty spaces of tho Empire would _ render them ft menace to its .security and safety.
