WRITS ISSUED.
CLAIMS BY CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT. MADE AGAINST CITY MERCHANTS. Two writs, one for a large amount and the other for a smaller sum, have been issued -at tlio instigation of the Customs Department against Messrs Barlow Brothers, well-known merchants in Christchurcli, who up to a little while ago had a large wholesale business in tobacco and general smoking utensils.
The writs have been issued to claim duty, which the Department has alleged has not been paid through the actions of an. employee of the firm, who, it is alleged, was mixed up in the Customs frauds. The employee has left the city, but the. Department lias taken the stand that the firm is liable for tlio amount involved, although it knew nothing of the depredations.
