SOME RECENT IMPROVEMENTS. BOROUGH ENGINEER'S REPORT. At last night's meeting of theLyttelton Borough Council the borough engineer, Mr H. Barnard, made some interesting statements in tho courso of his report concerning recent alterations that had been effected in the port's water supply. He reported that the connecting up of the new sixinch mains on the middle level to the various cross mains had been completed and the fire plugs removed from the three-inch mains and fitted to tho sixinch. " The completion of this work,'' he continued, "will fill a long-felt want for extra pressure for fire prevention purposes, and tho pressure at some of 'the plugs lias been trebled, and with the extra storage on the middle and upper levels an abundance of water was assured, if required." The report further stated that the plastering of the new reservoir had been completed, and the reservoir was put into use on Wednesday, the water being pumped up by the gas engine, which dealt with tho load very satisfactorily. The reticulating of the top houses on the upper level was now on a very satisfactory footing. The holding capacity of the new reservoir was 42.000 gallons, and the total cost £-386 0s 7d. A one-inch service had been put in for the Harbour Board for supplying the dredge Te Whaka. A recent, break at Gladstone Pier had accounted for a loss of 3000 gallons of water per Tho engineer further reported that the contractors at Heathcote had completed tho sinking of tho first well of three inches to a- depth of 253 ft, with o flow of fifty gallons per minute. The second well, which was to be driven. 320 ft. was down 4ft. Councillor Miller, chairman of the Works Committee, said the new reservoir had been constructed by the Council under the engineer's estimate, while the. capacity of the reservoir had been increased by close on 1 -5.000 gallop.;.
