SYSTEM HAS FAILED.
I .OVERDUE STATISTICS. (By Telegraph—Special to '" Star.") ' WELLINGTON, March 14. To the commercial world prompt information regarding imports and exports is a vital necessity, but the Customs Department has woefully failed to come up to its former standard of promptitude in regard to the particulars of New Zealand imports for last January. The figures under the former practice ivero available about a. week after the end of the month, but the January figures are still uncompleted, and I am informed officially that they cannot bo obtained before the beginning of April. - When the April figures will appear for the. guidance of the business comj munity is apparently ;i. hopeless thing to speculate over, because the Department's statistical staff is wrestling with a new system. This was much belauded by tho Minister of Customs when introduced, but judging by results it is a hopeless and expensive failure.
