POLICE PHILANTROPISTS.
At the annual matinee at Brighton Hippodrome in aid of the Police-Aided Scheme for Clothing Destitute Children, over thirty artists took part, including some of. the most famous people on the stage. Last year, by this annual event, the police charity in question benefited to the extent of £167. The police scheme, in which the late King Edward showed a personal interest, was started by the Chief Constable of Brighton, Mr W. B. Gentle, ten years ago. During December and January over seven hundred boys and girls who have, been reported 'nsufficiently clad have been provided from the fund with clothing and hoots, while a considerable number of girls have received complete outfits for domestic service. The scheme enjoys extensive and generous support.
PROFIT-SHARING IN AMERICA. Mr Benjamin Altman. one of New York's greatest merchant princes and art collectors, who died recently, anticipated Mr Ford, of '.Detroit, in making provision for a scheme of profit-sharing amongst four hundred employees rf his general goods store. The total amount available is not declared, but already in the last- few days £200,000 have been distributed amongst the workers, -uk! a fund is set apart with the object of further developing the system, which will be administered by a board of trustees. Eleven employees received £IOOO each, and others less, the sum awarded being graded according to the position and length of service'of the recipient. Apart from establishing a protisharing scheme. Mr Aitman bequeathed over £5,000,000 to charitable and educational agencies.
