COUNTRY NEWS.
RANGIOEA. The School Committee met on "Wednesday evening, Mr "W. McGrner (chairman) and all the members being present. The Hoard of Education forwarded a. report on the Technical Classes furnished by Mr J. H. Howell, director of manual training. It was decided to ask permission of the Board to make use of a number of dual desks stored iu the Technical School. The headmaster reported a roll number of 271 and an average attendance of 190 for the past five weeks, an epidemic of measles having accounted for the absence of a number of the children. He regretted that the school classes for teaching swimming could not bo held this year owing to no time having been allotted for the use of the bath during which thev might be taken. It was resolved that the chairman should endeavour to arrange with Dean Hyland for fixed hours to be observed by the Catholic and Borough schools for swimming lessons. The chairman, Sirs Cox, Mr Lane and the headmaster werfc appointed a subcommittee to make arrangements for a break-up entertainment. SOUTHBROOK. The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Wednesday evening. Mr A. M'lntosh was in the chair. The master's report stated the school roll number to be 140, with an average attendance for the month of 122. It was decided to the annual excursion to Sumner on Thursday, December 11. The members of tho Southbrook School Committee have probably a record amongst school committees for the aggregate number of their children. In comparing the number of their olive branches at their monthly meeting on Wednesday evening it was found that the total possessed by the seven was forty-one, not all attending school.
