It is odd that our best cabinetwork should have appeared in the eighteenth century (and been almost coincidental with it), a century in which the other arts had declined. Literature and painting experienced a wonderful revival towards the end of this century; but with this renaissance the cabinetmaker's craft entered its last decades of excellence.
