The annual "gathering -of the clans" of the Soottish Society was opened last night by a smoke concert in the Society's rooms, and was attended by about fifty members,' including a'number from the country. Chief Mackintosh presided, and after the usual loyal and patriotic toasts had been honoured, the chief gave; "The Scottish Society of New Zealand," arid referred to the'aims and objects of the Society, ivhich now had a membership of about 250. " The land we live in'" was given by Mr J. Allan, of Waikari, and other toasts were also'. honoured. Scottish songs were sung, and many quaint stories were tola. Mr Malcolm accompanied the ' singers on the piano, and the- pipers, were Piper Frazer, the Society's piper, and Piper J. J. Allan, of Waikari. Out of three persons struck; by lightning only one is killed.
