A LICENSING CASE.
[Per Peess Association.] GISBORNE, May 28. A petition is being forwarded by tonight's mail, through Mr W. D. S. Mac-Donald, M.P., to the Minister of Justice, praying for a hearing in open Court before a Magistrate appointed by the Department, of an application of fitness in respect of the Record Reign Hotel. The petition is signed by heads of all mercantile firms, by a majority of the borough councillors, and all leading professional and business men, and some of the members of the no-license party, and it is understood that the petition has the sympathy of leading members of that party behind it. The petitioners claim that at the last hearing the weight of evidence was clearly in favour of the granting of the application, and that in view of Quinn's very high character and reputation he is the most suitable man to hold the license of the hotel. They urge that in view of the fact that no appeal lies from the decision of the Magistrate, Quinn will be resting under grave injustice unless he is given an opportunity of having a further application heard before a Magistrate appointed by the Department-
