SYDENHAM BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.

SIXTH ANNUAL MEETING

The sixth annual meeting of the "Sydenham Burgesses' Association was held last night. Mr J. Butterfield, president, was in the chair, and there was a fair attendance.

Mr J. Crowley moved, in pursuance of notice, that no member should hold the position of president or chairman for two years in succession. He said that he wanted the younger members to take an active part in the Association's affairs. After some discussion, the motion was carried .unanimously. The town clerk wrote stating that the Council could not see its way to erect a lamp at the corner of Wordsworth Street and Colombo Street, as requested by the Association, in view of the proposed electric lighting scheme. The secretary, Mr J. T. Forrester, in the annual report, stated that the year commenced with a balance of 2d, and closed with a balance of 5s Bd. The income totalled £7 2s Bd. During the year the Association had lost three valuable members by death, and one member had left Christchurch. The executive's meetings had been well attended, some members attending every meeting. The president had worked hard during the year. He had obtained several new members, and in many ways had helped the Association. The report and bal-ance-sheet were adopted. Mr G. E. Good said that the Association had done good, work during the year,- and he hoped that the coming year would prove equally successful. At the request of members, the secretary briefly outlined the work which the Association had done during the past twelve months in the way of improving the streets and general condition of the ward, > The election of officers resulted as follows:—President. The retiring president thankee! the officers and the members for the assistance they had accorded him.

A vote of thanks was passed to the president and_ the other retiring officers for their efficient services. The new president returned thanks for his election, and asked the officers and executive to assist him during the coming year to_ their utmost. The other officers also briefly returned thanks for their election.

The executive was empowered to arrange a social during the year.

Tt "was decided to hold over the question of joining the United Burgesses' Association until the next meeting.

The secretary was instructed to write to Mr 0. W. Hulme. the returning officer, and ask if the rolls were scrutinised after the last municipal election. Thp> president stated that it was rumoured that the rolls were not scrutinised, and, if that were so, tbpro was nothing to prevent plural voting.
