CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, May 14. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) Drunkenness.--One statutory first offender for drunkenness was convicted and discharged. —Daniel Burke, a third offender, was convicted and ordered to pay 17s 6d expenses, in default seven days' imprisonment. Remanded.—William James Thomas (Mr Cassidy) was remanded tiH'*May 21 on a eharge of having received the sum of £7 in terms requiring him to account For the money to Horace Reuben Mansfield, and that he had fraudulently Failed so to do. Bail was allowed in self £SO and one 6urety £SO. A Serious Charge.—A yoilng man named Charles Elley was charged with having assaulted a girl under the age of sixteen years. Mr Cassidy appeared for the accused, and on his application the case was remanded till May 22. Bail was allowed in self £75 and one surety of £75. At Large.—For allowing two calves bo wander on the roads at New Brighton, B. A. Jameson was convicted and discharged.—John Cairns, for allowing a horse and foal to wander in St Albans, was fined 5s and costs. Cyclists in Trouble.—For riding a bicycle on the footpath, Thomas Laffey was fined 5s and costs, and Douglas Rhind 7s and costs.—For cycling at night without having a light, Charles Harding was fined 10s and costs. Excessive Speed.—For riding a mo-tor-bicycle round the corner of Colombo and Gladstone Streets at an excessive speed, Albert Bond was fined 5s and costs.—Randall Topliss, who drove a motor-car over the Bank of New Zealand crossing at an excessive speed, was fined 5s without costs.—Claude E. Cooper, who had exceeded the limit when going along Cashel Street, was fined 5s and costs.—Jack Whitty, for driving a motor-car along Regent Street, Woolston, at a dangerous speed, was fined 5s and costs.—Herbert Beaumont, who had travelled along the same street at thirty miles an hour, was also fined 5s and costs. Sound the Horn!—Ewin C. Salt was fcnarged with having driven round the corner of Worcester Street and Mile Road without having sounded his horn or bell, or bavins given any warning of his approach. He was fined 10s ana costs.—For similar offences, Alfred M'Connell and Frank J. Humblin, who did not put up any defence, were each fined 5s and costs.

Too Fast on Race Dat.—Frederick Hardwick was fined 30s and costs for having driven a motor-car too fast in Gloticester Street'on a race day. The speed was estimated by the police at thirty-five miles an hour.—Edward "William Johnston Hayes and William Un2™'j n° rt r similar offences, were each fined 30s and costs.

Heavy Traffic.—Alexander Cockfcurn and James Torrance were each lined 10s and costs for having driven vans loaded too heavily in Brougham Street at a speed faster than five miles an hour.

Bheach of Award.—Dennis Brothers (Mr Flesher) were fined 10s and costs on each of two charges of having failed to grant a half-holiday to two employees, one a chef and the other an assistant-cook, as required by the restaurant employees' award. The same defendants were fined 10s and costs for having failed to keep a holiday book.

Remanded.—Alexander Buick (Mr Cassidy) was remanded for a week on several charges of having received moneys on behalf of George Costello Bnd having failed to account for them. Place of Bttstn'ess.— The Magistrate gave his reserved decision in the case Bgainst Charles O'Malley (Mr Cassidy}. It was an action for a breach of award. In that he had failed to pay travelling time, and argument in the case was centred on the interpretation of "a of business." O'Malley, who was contractor for the Papanui tram extension, contended that the contractors' hut on the job, where he engaged and paid the men, was his place of business and that, no travelling time should he paid. The Magistrate fined him £4 10s and costs on one charge and le and costs on nine others.
