WELLINGTON HOCKEY.

—- —♦ [From Our Correspondent.] A rather late start with the interclub competition has found players keyed almost right up to concert pitch, with the result that the opening games last Saturday • were all pretty keenly contested. Altogether, the bully-off was a promising one. In the Senior competition Karori and United, those old-time rivals, had a close tussle, last year's champions (Karori) emerging from the fray with a one-point margin in their favour. It was a near thing, but the winners, perhaps, just had the better of it. A single goal was also the only difference between Victoria College and Weill r-gton, the Collegians ginning by five goals to four. In the third Senior game, Metropolitan put down Government Insurance by a three to one majority. Mr H. V. Walton, who we could ill afford to lose, left Wellington for Auckland last Saturday. It does not say much for Wellington when an enthusiast with such valuable services to Wellington hockey to his credit, is allowed to leave without any mark of recognition whatever. But his is not a lingular case. Is it that we are lacking in appreciation? Nelson has invited our represent it ivo team over on the King' 6 Birt/idav (June 3), and as we owe them a visit an attempt should'be made to get a team away.
