THEFT FROM STEAMER.

At Lyttelton to-day, before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., Timothy O'Brien, a trimmer on board the steamer lonic, was charged with having on April 2(5 stolen six suits, one gold watehchain and pendant, one matchbox and £7 in money, of a total value of £32, the property of James Burrage. The same accused was also charged with having, on the same date, stolen two suits, two pairs pyjamas, three white shirts, two silk scarves and one towel, the piopertv of William Summers, and valued at £5 5s 6d.

The accused pleaded guilty to all the charges, with the exception of the theft of the monev.

Sergeant Ryan stated that O'Brien had taken the articles from the berths of the two officers while they were absent on deck. Most of the clothing had been recovered, and also the jeweller}'.

O'Brien was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on the first charge and to three months' imprisonment on the second, the sentences to be concurrent.
