Before the Empire Trade Commission, Mr Oxenham, secretary of the Portal Department, gave evidence in favour of a State-owned Atlantic cable, so that the Pacific Cable Board could have full control of the traffio between the United Kingdom and Australia, and he in a position to provide the cheapest, speediest and most efficient service possible in the circumstances. He suggested that the ordinary cable rates should he reduced to 2s, Press rates to 6d, deferred rates to Is, and week-end cables to 6d per word. He considered that the present scanty Press cables would be considerably increased if the rates were reduced.
