OVER THE HILL.
MESSRS HOWARD. WEBB AND COOKE REFUSE TO PAY FINES. Some weeks ago a number of men well known in Labour circles in Christchurch were fined in varying amounts for having addressed a meeting at the Clock Tower, thereby causing an obstruction of the traffic. Among them were Messrs E. Howard, F. R. Cooke and P. C Webb, who were each fined £2 and costs. As a result of failure to pay their fines, Howard and Cooke were arrested to-day at the Trades Hall., Gloucester Street, and, together with Webb, who gave himself up, were taken to the Lyttelton Gaol, to servo a month's imprisonment instead of the line.
