MONTENEGRO'S FRIEND.
Mrs Holbach, author of " Dalmatia, che .Land where .East moots West," and other books on tho Near East, writes in the " Standard " May I point, out that in tho Montenegrin war not only is a woman, Miss Edith iMjrhnm, the well-known travel lor and author, acting as war correspondent-, but that she alone of a.il tho foreign correspondents is with the army at the front! That .Miss .Durham is allowed to £0 where she will while other Press representatives are stopped at Cetinje is due to her espousal of many years' ptamlinj? of tho Serb en use and long friendship for the Montenegrins, by whom she is implicitly trusted. In one of her messages Miss Durham says:—'l have joined the lied Cross, so you must not expect long messages every day.' Sho is putting the care of the wounded hefore her despatches 1 Is not this interesting, allowing it does that a woman may enter a field of work hitherto considered the •especial province of men, and excel as Miss Durham does in phvs'oal courage and endurance, and yet, not lose a whit of tho ' womanly ' virtues of compassion and tenderness? I should like to know if there is any other instance on record of a journalist joining tho Red Cross and uniting tho duties of war correspondent and nurse."
