The la'd who has loomed large in the public eye of Auckland recently as John .Bandley, the boy burglar, came before Mr Frazer, S.M., this morning on a' series of breaking and entering charges. This time he appeared as Charles Edward Banbury, and he figured not as a juvenile of fifteen, but as a youth of eighteen. Not only-does his ingenious escape from the police station stamp him as a young man of imagination, but an amended version of his: autobiography shows that Shis first account of liimself, was fictional in many respects. In the course of the hearing against him this morning in the breaking and entering charges in the City Chambers, Detective-Sergeant Cox said that Bandley had stated th?it his first statement was wrong, so far as it related to the story of his life, and he gave an amended statement. . In this he said his real nam© was Charles Edward Banbury', and stated that he * was eighteen years of age on October 3 last. His resided at Leicliardt, in New South Wales, but he had lived mostly : with an aunt and uncle at Enfield. near Sydney, and had been three times convicted for theft. He had served on. the training ship Sobraon for about six months, and had been sent later to a Government farm. Afterwards he joined the Westralia as galley boy, and then lie served on the I'ilbara in the same capacity. He joined the Victoria on her last trip from Sydney"to Auckland as store boy, and reached Auckland on Sunday week. He cam# ashore' 011 Monday night, said the sergeant, and committed the offences in the City Chambers buildings, afterwards going back to the Victoria and sleeping there. Next morning-he'-took his bag and deserted the ship. That night he broke into Smith and Caughey's and stole some goods, being captured an hour or so later in the yard _of -the Albert .Bre.werv, close by Smith and Caughey's.

Banbury was charged with having 011 the Monday night attempted to break and enter the shops of John Court, Ltd., and H. E. Partridge; with having broken and entered the premises of the Berlin, and London Piano Company; with having broken and entertrthe premises of Howey Walker, and stolen .1 gold ring, two half dollars, fc quarter dollar, and 2s 9d in money; with having entered the Tiffen Dining Rooms and stolen 2s; with having stoien a brooch, the property of Miss Mnnt-on. dressmaker, City Chambers: and with having stolen from Smith and Caughey, on Tuesday, two shirts, two. pairs of socks and other articles. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence.
