THE CLUNKET SHIELD.

AUCKLAND V. CANTERBURY

SOUTHERN 7 TEAM WINS M . EIGHT- WICKETS.

TO.-DAY'S PLAY. I'Pmii L'nl'.s.-i Association.] A UCK I.ANI), .Innunry 31. Auckland resumed at 11.14. The wicket was fast, and there was a strong northerly wind blowing. Taylor (34) and Oliff (/>) continued the innings, playing carefully. Oliff sent a ball from Carlton to the pavilion, bringing up 191). Huns canto slowly, the next quarter of an hour resulting only in eleven runs. The doilJjle century was reached three minutes later. Taylor 40, Olid' 14. Another ten minutes saw 14 i;ulis added, then Taylor snicked a hall for four, both batsmen hitting freely, Taylor especially, the latter reaching his half-century in half an hour and five minutes, the score standing at 230 without- any further wickets. Then came another lull in run-making, the field keeping close up, allowing the batsmen no chances. Taylor got a neat ono to the boundary off Bennett, and a moment later the same bowler got (Miffs bails with a tricky ono. At noon the score stood, seven wickets for 238.

Kavanagh took Oliff's place, but his partnership .with Taylor only lasted ten' minutes, Reese bowling him with the, first bull of his second over after lie had made six runs, including ono three. 285—8—6. Play had now been in progress an hour, Auckland having added just another century to their overnight score. Kerr followed Kavanagh, but had no better luck than his predecessor, getting out lbw to Reese,; after making one run t 285—9—1. Robinson joined Taylor, and.the latter* when he had reached 80, had a'very, narrow, escape from being run out. Robinson, who for a long time'-, had most of the overs, played very cautiously;, the field having been drawn closely round to leg, in anticipation of the fall of; the final wicket. Robinson' continued his stonewalling, iu order to allow'Taylor to get the bowling, and the latter kept on steadily adding to his t total. At two minutes to one. however, when Taylor's score was eight off the century, lie was .stumped by. Bqxshall. off Carlton, and Auckland's second innings closed for 293.

A shower which fell during the adjournment did not affect the. wicket. Wanting 120 to win, Canterbury opened their second innings > \Vith Lusk and Caygill, Ivavanagh and Oliff taking up the bowling. After ll l runs had been got in .singles the batsmen 'began to hit out. Caygill square-cut ,01 UP to the, boundary, the only score from the over.. Lusk banged -Kavanagh'S fourth past point to the boundary, and drove his last. £o the chalk; mark, reaching 20 and making his fifth successive fqur. OlifF bowlecl a maiden, and"-Kerr relieved Kavantigh. Lusk pulled his. last ball to the boundary, bringing 30 up and making his own score 27. NOTES oFTHE PLAY. [Fkom Our Correspondent.] AUCKLAND, January 31. Tlie weather was fine, with a strong northerly breeze, when the. match resumed. Bennett and Carlton bowled, and 1 Taylor and Oliff batted, placing f:orly frev'y and adding .35 in half an hour. Six wickets for 222. The two men played the brightest cricket _ on the Auckland side, and carried the total from 164 to 238 before Bennett bowled Oliff, the ball coming in and keeping low. 2387 —23. Kavnnagh was the next player. Kavanagh stayed long enough to show his characteristic mowing when Reese bowled him. 250—8—6. Kerr stopped a straight one with his leg —*263—9 —l—but Robinson put up a fair stand with the last wicket. Taylor was meanwhile scoring consistently, and when within sight of Canterbury's total, however, he lifted his foot in going forward to one and was stumped. 293—10—92. Robinson's play during the morning lasted an hour and threequarters. Taylor played excellent cricket, and though Reese and Sandman beat him at times he showed a sound defence for the most part. The wicket is playing well.
