AUCKLAND EXHIBITION.

REPRESENTATION OF CANTERBURY.

This morning Mr Pi Hercus, president of the Canterbury Industrial Association, Mr J. B. Laurenson, secretary, and Mr F. Notley Meadows waited on the Mayor, and discussed with him the representation of Christohurcli and Canterbury at the. Exhibition, which will be opened sit the end of the year. Mr Meadows said that the Exhibition ; would; afford an excellent n:tean<s of advertising the city. Auckland had a large influx of visitors from all parts of the world, and the opportunity for l advertising Christchurch should not be 1 missed. The executive of the Exhibition offered prizes for the 'best cial courts. Timaru. had , decided to have a South Canterbury .court. To the International Exhibition in. Christchurch the City Council gave £3OO and other local bodies also gave sums. It would be an industrial undertaking and would bo purely ■ New. Zealand in character. Wool and grain from Canterbury could bfe sent. He had 'seen the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce already, but it was thought that the City Council should take some step, especially as .the cities of the dominion were adopting mi advertising., policy just now. He thought that- there should bp a court representing the city ill particular and the province generally., 1 The Mayor said that Christchurch shotild be' well* represented. "A substantial exhibit would be a magnificent advertisement for the city, but it would be better to have no city or provincial exhibit than to have a poor one. He would' be in Wellington all next week, and when he returned he would bo busy with . the Lake Coleridge .scheme. • In the circumstances he 'thought that the president of the Industrial "Association might take the proposal in hand. . Mr Hercus said, that his Association strongly supported the Exhibition. Many members of the. Association would be-represented.' A Canterbury court, however, was a different thing. It would deal with pastoral, agricultural, ' mining and other interests., If a Canterbury court was established, other • bodies besides the Industrial Association would, have, to be consulted. It was too large, a scheme for the. Association to take in liand alone, but it would Work heartily with other bodies. . The Mayor said that he would get into touch with the representatives of a. bodies in the, city, and woiild 1 a" meeting to discuss Mr Meadows's proposals.. He hoped that the Exhibition would v be successful.
