ALLEGED THEFT.

■ TRAM CONDUCTOR CHARGED. ' David James M'Ksnme, a tramcal conductor, Was charged yesterday after-, noon at the Magistrate's Court, before Mr V. G. Day, S.Mi, with having stolen on January 18. a peggy-bag containing £l4 10s, the property of Mary Ann Clark. Mr Alpevs appeared for the accused, who pleaded not guilty. Mary Ann Clark gave evidence as to the loss of her bag,' and corroborated the evidence that had been given pie* viously by her daughter. Annie Watson stated that she got on a Fendalton tramcar on January 18 about a quarter to twelve in the morning. She saw a black bag lying on the seat, and she picked it up and handed it to the. accused. He put it into his bag and said, " Some people are always losing something." He did not take witness's name. The bag was weighty. Witness was going home at the time. Three days later witness saw an advertisement in a newspaper relating to n bag that had been lost, and she communicated with Mrs Clark. Mrs Clark, Mrs Sutherland and the witness went to the Tramway Board office in Fa Is grave Street and saw the accused there. After other evidence was taken his Worship stated that it was a case which would have to be left to a jury to decide. The accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in church. Bail was granted accused in his own recognisance for £25 and one surety of £25.
