A laclv whoso friends had arrived unexpectedly got up an impromptu din-ner-party, and was compelled to send to the nearest pastry-cook's for somo large tarts. All wont on well until the lady, unluckily wishing to show off by protending not to know what- was' at her own table, pointed to the dish with an au- ot great dignity, and inquired : "John. what are these tarts?" "Where;*t John briskly replied: " l''oiirnonen apiece, uui'iuu."
