The raring carnival at Riccarton next week will be the subject in the "Canterbury Times" of August 14 of a very fine selection of photographs of notable horses that will be seen on the papular racecourse during the Na- " tiorial meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club. The pictures have been arranged attractively in composite form, and they should prove very ac/ceptable to patrons of the turf. .Amongst the general miscellany will be . a panoramic photograph of Ghnstchurch and the Port Hills, taken after the recent fall of snow, a capital series of views of Dannevirke, two illustrations depicting the great fire at Messrs ~ Whitcombe and Tombs's in Wellington, a flashlight photograph of the recent rally pf the Reform Party, and scenes and pictorial studies. Topical matters will be described by the journal s cartoonist, and there will be a page of dominion views of amateur photographers. The literary portion of the journal will contain a wealth of good reading, and the various columns devoted to sporting, football and other pastimes and recreations will.be stocked profusely with news, notes and feneral information. Complaints that the City Council Btaff has been making two demands for water rates are groundless, according to the Mayor. To-day Mr Holland gtated that the officers had no choice in the matter, and were aoting in accordance with the Act, which provided that the water rates must be collected in two half-yearly instalments.
