The following is the result of the byelection for North-West Manchester caused by the resignation of the sitting Liberal member, Sir George Kemp:— Sir John Randies (Con.) . 6573 Mr Hewitt (Lib.) . . . 4371

(For the first twenty • years following the 'last redistribution of seats in Great Britain, North-West Manchester was a safe Tory seat, and at two elections held during that period the Liberals did not challenge the election of Sir W. Houldsworth, the Conservative candidate. At the general election in 1906, Mr "Winston Churchill stood in the Liberal interest and' defeated his opponent, Mr W. Joynson-Hicks (Conservative), by 1241 votes. In April, 1908, on Mr Churchill's appointment to the Board of Trade, it was necessary for him to seek re-election, and he suffered defeat, Mr Joynson-Hicks winning the seat by a majority of 429, a Socialist candidate being also in the field. At the general election at the beginning of 1910, Sir George Kemp, formerly a Conservative, stood in the Liberal interest, and won the seat by a majority of 783. At the election liel-d at the close of the same year, Mr A. Bonar Law, "the present leader of the Conservative Party left a safe seat in order to throw down the gauntlet to Sir George Kemp, but ho_ was defeated, the figures being:—Sir George Kemp 5559, A. Bonar Law 5114. Sir John Randies, the new member, was formerly member for the Cockermouth division of Cumberlain, where he defeated the late Sir "Wilfrid Lawson.)
