In the course of a general discussion in the House of Commons on Britain's withdrawal from the Sugar Convention, Mr Asquith stated that the effect of withdrawal had been greatly exaggerated. Tho really important step was taken in 1908. He rejoiced in the withdrawal, which he contended would secure to Britain economic freedom without sacrifice. He added that beet cultivation might receive assistance from the development fund.
