SHIPMENT OF PAINTINGS DUE IX Cflß ISTCHURCH. valuable additions to GALLERY. By the Athenic, due in Wellington tliis' week, tho Canterbury Society of Arts is importing a dozen valuable oil paintings specially selected in the Old Country to encourage art in Christchurch by placing bcioro tho public examples of the best work by leading artists. The paintings are as follow : The late James Aumouicr, 11.1., 1i.0.1., landscape, oil. K. K. Brigffs, H. 1.. landscape, water-colour. KdjraY Bandy. H. 1., K. 0.1., figure!-, watorcolour. 11. 11. La Tlianscue, A.8.A., figure, oil. Arnesly Brown, A. 15.A., landscape and cattle. oil. Crcorgo Hoiuy, A.ft.A., figure, oil. Julius Olshou, 1i.0.1., sea piece, oil. Arthur W'nrdlc, animal*, oil. Cecil Ren, figure, oil. Conßtanee Halford, figure*, nil. Neils if. Lund, 15.0.1., landscape, oil. A. F. V. Havward, 11.0.1., 1 ri.=. oil. The paintings are probably beyond tho moans of tiie average iprivnte'collector, and tho Society hopes to add them to its permanent collection with a little outside assistance. There is a sum of nearly £SOt) in band, obtained partly from Government grants, and it is hoped that some wealthy patrons of art will supplement this sum to enable tho Society to purchase all the pictures. The pictures will be landed early next week, and will be transhipped to Ohri.vtchurch at the earliest opportunity. Tliov will arrive in timo for inclusion in the Society's annual exhibition, which is now open, and will he an additional stimulant to tho public to visit tho gallery. A public art union is being arranged by the secretary, and tin! whole proceeds will be returned to tile public, who will be nble. to select their [prizes from the pictures in the Gallery.
