FIRES.
The Fire Brigade turned out three times yesterday in response to fire alarms. At 6.41 a.m. the brigade turned out to a fire in a two-storeyed brick and iron building at the corner of Tuam and Madras Streets, owned by Messrs Badger Brothers. The ground floor was occupied by Messrs E. J. White and Co., chemical manufacturers, and the first floor was unoccupied. Tho man who gave the alarm saw smoke issuing from the building, but tho smoke was caused by linio slaking in tho course of chemical manufacturing, and no damage was done. At 11.5 a.m., a call was received from Toon's Road, St Albans. The fire proved to be in a gorse hedge at the rear of Mr A. M'Ferran's property. Two chains of the hedge were ruined by fire. At 11.6 the brigade was again sent for to extinguish a fire at tho rear of the premises of Messrs Andrew Lees and Son, a painters' establishment, almost opposite the lire brigade station. The fire was caused by a lighted match coming in contact with benzine vapour. Fortunately, the brigade was able to deal with the fire promptly, and the damage was confined to the tin of benzine and a heap of rubbish.
