CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, August 15. (Before Air H. W. S.M.) Drunkenness. —One first offender for drunkenness was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours' — Harry Hayes, charged with a similar offence, was fined 10s, in default fortyeight hours' imprisonment. Keeping a Bkothel. —May Smith was charged with being the occupier of premises in Moorhouse Avenuo and having permitted, the samo to be used as <1 brothel. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on the understanding that she should go to the Salvation Army Horn© for three months. On a further charge that she was an idle and disorderly person having insufficient lawful means of support she was convicted. Tkeft. Herbert Seymour R-owe pleaded guilty to the theft of £7 4s, tho property of William James Foster. The police evidence was to the effect that the accused, who had just turned sixteen, had been employed by Faster as a baker's boy. He had collected £7 4s as debts owing to his emplcyer, but had failed to pay them in. The Magistrate sentenced the accused to one month's imprisonment, stating that he would make recommendations to the Governor to have him removed to an industrial school at the expiration of his sentence. Maintenance.—Frank Frederick Turkey was ordered to contribute towards tho support of hia child, an inmate of tho Receiving Home, at tho rate of 5s a week.—Colin Campbell, who had disobeyed a maintenance order requiring him to contribute to tho support of his wife. Susanna Campbell, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended for two weeks to enable the defendant to pay the arrears if 110 wished.—John Halligan, for having disobeyed a maintenance order against himself requiring him to coiltribute towards the support of his wife (Mr Hunt), was sentenced to one month's imprisonment in default of payment of tho arrears forthwith.—T. ojnas Douglas Edgar Miller (Mr Huntj) was charged with having failed to provide for the maintenance of his mother, Margaret Gallehawk (Mr Hunter). The Magistrate, ajter hearing evidence, ordered the defendant to contribute to hits mother's support at the rate of 8s a week. Mary Evelyn Coard was charged with having failed to provide for the maintenance of her father, aged seventy-six. The Magistrate remarked that the defendant was not liable under the Destitute Persons Act for her father's maintenance, as she was a married woman. The Magistrate spoke at some length to tho sisters of tno defendant, stating that he was entirely in sympathy with them in their desire to provide for tho old man's maintenance, but could do nothing in the terms of the Act. No order would be made.

Through Dp.ink.~~Alice Horsiield (Mr Salter) asked for a separation order against hor husband, Thomas Kay Horsiield (Mr Hunt), on the grounds of excessive driiiKing and ill-treatment. She said that the defendant was more often drunk than sober, and had illtreated her. lie had been dismissed from liis work on two occasions for drunkenness. The complainant said that she had three children, the, eldest of whom was nine years of ape, and that she had no means. The defendant said that he was a barman. He denied bavins taken home (tasks of whisky from his work, ard denied ever having been dismissed from his employment for drinking. He admitted having boon convicted for theft committed under the influence of liauor. Mrs Scddon said that she had known the complainant through nil her troubles. She told a very distress):;story about the wav in which the comnlainant had been treated by her husband, and said that sho considered that a separation order was necessary. The Magistrate said that he did n<>t believe the defence.

He would make an order that the complainant need no longer cohabit with her husband. He granted the custody of two children to the complainant. and ordered the defendant to contribute towards his wife's support at the rate of 25s a week, and also ordered him to pay the expenses of the cr.se. Alleged Theft.— - Alexander Wilson (Mr Baxter) was remanded till Wednesday, August 23, on a charge of breaking, entering and theft. Bail was allowed, accused in £SO and ono surety of £SO.
