A cohference between the Australian Workers' Union and the Pastoraliste' Federal Council in connection with a case before the Arbitration Court, in whicli the former is asking for an award to apply to the shearing industry, proved futile. SYDNEY LABOUR COUNCIL. SYDNEY. June 9. The committee of the Labour Council reported that the proposed scheme of co-operation, which relied upon a subscription of one shilling monthly from 120,000 trades unionists, was impracticable. though the principle of cooperation was approved. Members expressed the view that a co-operation effort with a strong backing was necessary in order to meet tha rings and combines. A member of the Coal Lumpers' Union informed the Council that shanghaing was rife at Newcastle. Men were bought and sold like sheep in Sydney, and then shipped to Newcastle.

CHICAGO BRICKMAKERS. (Received June [), 1.20 p.m.) VANCOUVER, June 8. It is reported that 40,000 men are idle at Chicago a« a result of the brickmakers' strike. Contracts valued at £10,000.000 are being held up. A settlement of the strike on a compromised wage-scale is expected to-day.
