[Per Peess Association.] PALMERSTON NORTH, March 15. This afternoon a fire broke out in the residence of Mr John Stevens, Somerset House, at Bulls. All that could be saved was a piano and couch from the drawing-room, which opened on the verandah, and some books and papers. It is feared, that Mr Stevens's valuable collections of old documents and papers relating to Native and district history, have been wholly destroyed.

A fire occurred at Beckenham on Monday night in a house oocupied by Mrs Purdom, but it was extinguished before much damage was done. Mrs Purdom, who was alone at the time,
