GOVERNOR ARRIVES.
— | WELCOMES, FORMAL AND INFORMAL. GREETINGS FROM LOYAL LITTLE LYTTELTON. His Excellency Lord Islington, accompanied by several members of liis suite, arrived by the Maori from, Wellington shortly before 7 a.m. to-day. A reception by the Lyttelton Harbour Board and by the Lyttelton Borough Council was lixed for 9 a.m.., and no one on shore saw the Governor during the early morning. Towards nine o'clock a crowd rapidly gathered on the wharf, and the shipping in port had by ■'hat time donned full-dress of bunting, while great strings of signal flags decorated, the time-ball station end flagstaff. A number of members of the Lyttelton Marine Bands mustered, a ud a guard of honour composed of the Permanent 'Artillery paraded at the side of the ferry steamer. The borough representatives awaited Lord Islington upon a platform constructed upon a large truck.
Lord Islington was super-punctual, reaching the wharf a few minutes before the appointed time, and sufficiently soon to catch the unwary napping. The bam!, playing the National Anthem, soon aroused the onlookers to a sense of the urgency of the, occasion, and instantly the wharf was all interested bustle and good-natured pushing for view-points. His Excellency's tall figure gave most of those in the 'neighbourhood the opportunity to make Ms acquaintance by sight, and he was easily selected on account of his whiteplumed. hat. Mr J. Richardson, as representative of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, in the absence of the chairman, stood opposite the gangway, and was the first to greet Lord Islington, tendering him a hearty welcome to the port. In reply his» Excellency Baid:—"l express to you my deep sense ot gratitude at the cordiality of your reception on this my first landing at the port of Lyttelton. and the first occasion upon which I visit the South Island or this dominion. I come here as the representative of his Majesty King George V., and in that capacity I know from my experience throughout the dominion that here in Lyttelton, as elsewhere, I shall receive that cordial
