At frequent intervals along each side of the wharves at Lyttelton, ring-bolts, are inserted for the purpose of making fast the nets -which are rigged'beneath gangways, and for the purpose of pre-' venting' articles of cargo from falling into the water. When not in use, the Tings, theoretically, lie flat in holes cut' in the planks of the decking; but in practice the holes fill with dirt and the rings stick up and trip the unwary. The new wharf, known as No. 4, has been fitted with a substitute for the; ring-bolts. A rectangular hole is cut: right through the decking, and a small iron bar bolted across the middle of t.ha : opening, flush with the general surface. The hole cannot block with dirt; it isno more dangerous to boot-heels thanthe old device; it cannot project; it is: easy to fasten a rope to; a£4 it is cheaper than the ring-bolt. Mr Knyvett, who was present by invitation, had an eaithusiastic reception; He said he had receipts for his disbursements and ' would show them to any member of the company, but would not part with theni They were all legitimate disbursements.
