THE MIDLAND RAILWAY
PROGRESS OF THE LINE. STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER [From Oue Cokbwondext.] "WELLINGTON, July 6. Mr Guinncss's question to the Minister of Public "Works urging the completion of the Midland line from Cass to Mata, Bealey Point, has evoked a satisfactory reply. The Minister states that the railway to the end of the Cass section is now nearly completed and will be opened afc an early date. The further section to-the junction of the Mingha'and Bealey Rivers would be an advantageous point for a temporary terminus of the line, as coaches could meet trains there. Construction works are in hand for more than half the distance. As soon as the line is opened to the Cass the journey between the east and west coasts will be reduced to one day's comfortable travelling. In reply to Mr Guinness the Post-master-General has promised favourable consideration of a daily mail service between. Christchurch and Greymoutli as soon as the line is opened to Cass. The Minister of Railways says that it would be inadvisable to acquire the Cass to Otira coach service, and that it would be useless in any case after the completion of the Otira tunnel.
