RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE TRENTJfj&M GATHERING. [FROM OUH vObhespondknt.J TIV4KTHAM, March 3. With tiio prospects of a record meeting, a largo number of marksmen arrived yesterday, and this morning practice- was being vigorously indulged in. Canterbury . will be well represented. Amongst tho Volunteer companies the Linwood Rifles appear to have tJie largest muster, having seven members. The Christchurch Defence Rifle Club ha 3 the same number. The Australian team has experienced the vagaries of the range, and A. Cutler, probably the finest shot in Australia, admits that it is tho hardest range he has fired on. The scoring testifies that, although some brilliant totals have been recorded. Cutler himself mfldo 101 over the 800, 900 and 1000 yds, scoring 35, 33 and 33 respectively. Should the weather not ho too bright when the Empire Match is fired,- New Zealand may win, but if it is bright it Avill enable the Australians to work on their old system, that of shooting on the mirage "and ignoring tho-flags. Gunderson, of the Christchurch Club, will be much missed this yoar, There are many expressions of regret at bis continued ill-health. Lincoln, Scargill and Banks Peninsula are well represented. It is generally conceded that high scores will be required to win oven minor prizes.

Many improvements have been made since last year, and the range presents a picturesque appearance.
