The scene is laid in Wellington, and. the opening chapter introduces the leading characters of the story —the inmates of No. 99, Picton Street. Five-year-old Mao is a typical sturdy young ISew Zealander. In the opening scene he narrowly escapes death from a runaway horse, being saved by a strange • young, lady, who, 'afc the risk of her own life, places Mac out of danger. The young lady, who is known as Miss Martin, becomes an honoured guest at No. 99, wher9 one and all soon .earn to love her for grace and sweetness. Then the unexpected happens.' Miss Martin suddenly disappears, and at the same time an Indian jewel, a highly-prized and valuable curio which the visitor had greatly admired, is also missing. The story of Misa Martin's subsequent troubles, and later her reappearance and restoration to happiness, unfolds itself through the succeeding chapters. Among the side issues of the story, Chapter VI. describes, an exciting, bowling match on the Wellington Club's green* In Chapter IX. we get a glimpse of Miramar, Wellington's popular suburb, where Mao works up a little romance on his own account. Chapter K. takes ub from the crowded city streets to the green coolness of the Wairarapa Valley, and later the one -note of tragedy is struck.
