A conference of the Australian Institute of Marine Engineers and the^ Steamship Owners' Association arrived at a settlement in regard to engineers' wages and conditions of labour. The settlement has been embodied in a memorandum, which both parties have asked the Federal Court of Arbitration to treat as an award of the Court. The settlement provides, that on steamers of a hundred horse-power first engineers shall receive £20, second engineers £16 and third engineers £14 a month; 100 to 150 horse-power, £21, £16 and £14; 160 to 200 horse-power, £22. £17 and £14 ; 200 to 250 horse-power, £24, £18, £15 and fourth engineers £12; 250 to *50 horse-power, £25, £18, £15 and £12 ; 350 to 450. horse-power, £27 10s, £19, £16 and £13; 450 horse-power upwards, £29, £20, £16 and £13. . Wages of fifth-class engineers £12, sixth-class £11, seventh-class £10. The agree-; ment, which is. for three years from May 1, is stated to be practically the same as that under which the engineers have been working for years, excepting the conditions regarding wages. The president agreed to certify to the agreement so as practically to give it the same effect as an award of the Court. He will submit his order for consideration of the parties interested on Friday.
