The scene is laid in Wellington, and the opening chapter introduces the leading characters of the story •—the inmates of No. 99. Picton Street. Five-year-old Mao is a typical sturdy young New Zealander. In the opening scene he narrowly escapes death from a runaway horse, being saved by a strange young lady, who, at the risk of her own life, places Mac out of danger. The young lady, who is known as Miss Martin, becomes an honoured guest at No. 99, where one and all soon '.earn to love her for frace and sweetness. Then the unexpeoted appens. Miss Martin suddenly disappears, and at the same time an Indian jewel, a highly-prized and, valuable curio which the visitor had greatly admired, is also missing. The story of Miss Martin's subsequent troubles, an_ later her reappearance and restoration to happiness, unfolds itself through the succeeding chapters. Among the side issues of the story. Chapter VI. describes an exciting bowling match on the Wellington Clubs green. In Chapter IX. we get a glimpse of Miramax, Wellington's popular suburb, where Mac works up a little romance on his own account. Chapter X. takes us from the crowded city streets to the green coolness of tbe Wairarapa Valley, and later the one note of tragedy is struck. Chapters XIII. and XIV. show us the Wellington college boy in and out of school, and contain an interesting sub-plot, in which fireworks play an important part. Among the minor characters may be mentioned Phoebe. Mac's energetic nurse, and her relative, the massive "Auntie Annie," who is mainly instrumental in bringing affairs to a happy conclusion.
